Support for local entrepreneurship: Lei 43 million in grants for 61 companies in the Republic of Moldova
24 February 2025, Chisinau — The Government of the Republic of Moldova, the European Union and the World Bank, through the Entrepreneurship Development Organisation of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalisation, provided 43 million lei in the form of grants to 61 local companies. The total value of investment in the economy generated by these funds amounts to more than lei 96.3 million.
Of the supported companies, 48 benefit from government funding, 11 are backed by EU funds, and an investment project is financed by the World Bank.
Grants are distributed through four programmes managed by ODA. Through Repowering and energy efficiency programme44 companies will benefit from grants totalling lei 37.7 million, with investment estimated at lei 86.7 million in the domestic economy. This funding is used for the purchase of modern machinery and the implementation of sustainable energy solutions, such as the installation of photovoltaic panels and the retrofitting of production lines.
Within Programme to support female entrepreneurshipnine companies will benefit from grants totalling lei 4.16 million. The implementation of these investment projects is estimated to generate a total investment of lei 7.73 million economy-wide. The funded initiatives target business development in sectors such as manufacture of milling, bakery and patiling products, healthcare and education.
Through Programme “Developing entrepreneurial capacities of Moldovan diaspora 2” (D.O.M.D.E. 2)seven companies in education, manufacturing, mental health and tourism receive grants totalling lei 688 thousand. These funds will facilitate investments estimated at RON 917.2 thousand. The programme is funded by the European Union and implemented with the support of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development and Migration Partnership Facility, through ODA, Veneto Lavoro and BRD.
A company obtained financing through Programme to increase export competitiveness and internationalisation of SMEsworld Bank funds amounting to RON 471.9 thousand. After the investment project has been implemented, approximately lei 963 thousand is estimated to contribute to the economy.
At the event Dumitru Alaiba, Vice-President and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalisation, stressed the importance of this support for entrepreneurs:
“Antrepreneurs are the engine of our economy, who turn ideas into reality and contribute directly to the country’s progress. Today’s event is not only a celebration of courage and your determination, but also a confirmation that Moldova has people with vision, ready to invest and build a better future at home here. Thank you for the trust you have in Moldova, because you invest here, create jobs and contribute to the development of our economy. The government, together with its partners, will continue to support entrepreneurs through funding programmes, business-friendly policies and measures to encourage innovation and growth”stated Dumitru Alaiba.
Vadim Codreanu, Director of the Organisation for the Development of Entrepreneurship, highlighted the impact of such financing on the entrepreneurial environment:
“Year 2025 starts promising with real opportunities for Moldovan entrepreneurs. Through these grants, the Government, the European Union and the World Bank provide them with essential resources for modernisation, repowering and improving energy efficiency. We are confident that these investments will support the development of sustainable businesses capable of creating jobs and contributing significantly to the national economy’, declared Vadim Codreanu.
Throughout 2024, the Organisation for the Development of Entrepreneurship facilitated 595 companies in accessing grants totalling more than lei 250 million. Of this amount, almost RON 179 million come from the state budget, while 54 million lei were provided by the European Union through the “EU for SMEs” project. Total investment in the economy amounts to lei 532.4 million.
Moreover, the World Bank, via the Programme for Growth of Export and Internationalisation of the HEIC, held 20 companies with funds worth almost lei 8 million.
Moreover, under the Digital Innovation and Startup Programme, 20 companies benefited from non-repayable grants amounting to lei 8.5 million, with the financial support of Ukraine-Moldova American Enterprise Fund, in partnership with the Viitor Technology Project, funded by USAID, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
