More than 20 Latvian companies participated in the Moldovan-Latvian Business People’s Forum in Chisinau
More than 20 Latvian companies participated in the Moldovan-Latvian Business People’s Forum organised in Chisinau on Wednesday 20 February 2013 by the Ministry of Economy and the Organisation for Investment Drawing and Export Promotion.The economic activity of Latvian businessmen are the areas of food industry, construction and architecture, electrical machinery and equipment, information services and technologies, etc.
The Forum started with speeches by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Vlad Filat and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, Valdis Dombrovskis on an official visit to Chisinau.
The Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, Octavian Calmâc, in his capacity as moderator of the Forum, mentioned ‘the organisation of the Business Forum, is one of the first joint actions of our countries planned in the framework of the Moldovan-Latvian Intergovernmental Commission for Collaboration on Economic, Industrial and Technological and Scientific Matters, which recently took place in Riga. This will be followed by a series of other actions to develop trade and economic relations between our countries”.
The Moldovan side presented its investment projects to Latvian businessmen in particular in the fields of agriculture, road infrastructure, construction, pharmaceuticals, transport, as well as the National Privatisation Programme for the coming years.
Particular attention was paid in the presentations to the projects to reform the area of indigenous quality infrastructure for which technical assistance is provided by the Government of the Republic of Latvia, which is one of the key areas in the preparation of the Republic of Moldova for the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the EU.
The presentations at the Forum are also complemented by the roundtables, where business people from both countries have the opportunity to create direct business collaboration contacts.
“Although Moldovan-Latvian trade is on the rise, far from reflecting the true potential of our economies. The actions taken by the Governments of both countries are intended to create a collaborative platform of maximum benefit for the economic operators of the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Latvia ", said Octavian Calmâc.
NOTE: Moldova’s volume of foreign trade with Latvia in January-November 2012 was $10,4 mln., up by one percentage point compared to the analogue period of 2011. The export of domestic goods to the Baltic market was $4,6 mln. or about 15 % more than in 2011. In the 11 months of the previous year, imports from Latvia amounted to $5,8 mln., an increase of 10.8 % compared to 2011.
